Mattia Trunfio, MD, is about to defend his PhD thesis at University of Turin, Italy, on the cerebrospinal fluid virome in people living with HIV, and he is currently a visiting scholar and postdoc candidate at the San Diego CFAR Translational Virology Core. Mattia graduated as medical doctor at University of Milan (Italy) in 2014, and he specialized in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at the University of Turin (Italy) in 2018, with several clinical and research experiences abroad during his studies (Tanzania, Uganda, Brighton, and Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Liverpool). HeĀ  served during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turin, and then he moved to University of California San Diego in 2022 during his last year of PhD studies. Mattia's research interest is focused on the Central Nervous System complications of chronic infections, primarily HIV and co-infecting viral pathogens.
