Dr. Jamila Stockman: YWCA Tribute to Women & Industry Award
We are proud to announce that Jamila K. Stockman, PhD, MPH (front row, second from right), was honored at the YWCA of San Diego County’s 20th Annual In the Company of Women benefit luncheon, featuring the distinguished Tribute to Women & Industry Awards (TWIN) on Friday, May 4, 2018. These prestigious awards celebrate the strength, courage, and spirit of women and their extraordinary achievements. This year’s TWIN Award acknowledges Dr. Stockman’s leadership and research career, which is dedicated to improving the lives of women who have experienced intimate partner and sexual violence. Her research is advancing our understanding and providing interventions to reduce HIV, substance abuse, and violence against women. In addition to her research, Dr. Stockman actively collaborates with local public health departments and community-based organizations to address the negative effects of violence and HIV in families and relationships. Dr. Stockman is Vice Chief and Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health, and Director of the Disparities Core, San Diego Center for AIDS Research. Congratulations on this notable and deserving award!
Dr. Brooke West: IAS Injecting Drug Use Research Prize
We are proud to announce that Dr. Brooke West, PhD recieved the IAS Injecting Drug Use Research Prize at the 2018 22nd International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam. Dr. West is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health at UCSD.
The three IAS Injecting Drug Use Research Prizes are awarded by the IAS HIV Co-Infections and Co-Morbidities initiative. They are incentives for researchers to address important research questions around the management of HCV infection and/or HIV/HCV co-infection in people who inject drugs, in particular through interdisciplinary research on drug dependence, harm reduction and/or drug policy. The prizes are presented to the three top-scoring abstracts in any of these areas.

Integrating Infectious Disease Considerations with Response to the Opioid Epidemic: A Workshop
This one-and-a-half-day public workshop will discuss infectious disease consequences of the opioid epidemic, giving particular attention to viral hepatitis, HIV, and endocarditis. The workshop will address strategies to prevent and treat infections in people who inject drugs, especially strategies that emphasize empathy, respectful treatment, and patient satisfaction. The speakers will address ways to work efficiently though the existing public health and medical systems. The agenda will be posted on the workshop webpage shortly.

First Annual Mucosal Systems Meeting
The first annual HIV Mucosal Systems Meeting (April 29th -May 2nd 2018, Santa Rosa, CA) abstract deadline is this Friday February 23rd by 8pm EST. Please submit abstracts to mucsysinfo@northwestern.edu. The goal of this meeting is to provide a much-needed platform for international interchange on important topics relating to HIV interactions with mucosal systems. Sessions include: an overview session describing HIV relevant mucosal, mucosal innate and adaptive immunology, mucosal epithelial barriers, microbiome, mucous properties, mucosal transmission, interventions, technological advancements in mucosal research, and relevant epidemiology and clinical science aspects in HIV.
Please limit your abstract body to 300 words, and designate if you are an early career investigator eligible for a scholarship (defined here as in a training position such as graduate student, postdoctoral fellow, or within 3 years of Assistant Professor designation). Scholarships will be awarded based on abstract quality and will cover registration and lodging costs for 20+ young investigators. The African Postdoctoral Training Initiative
The African Academy of Sciences (AAS), the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are partnering under the auspices of the Coalition of African Research & Innovation (CARI) to establish a postdoctoral training fellowship program, the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative (APTI). Training will be at a world class institute, the intramural laboratories of NIH.
APTI fellows will train in a global health research area of priority for their home institutions and countries, and AAS, BMGF and NIH, while building bridges and lasting connections between the partner organizations and African scientists and institutions. While at the NIH, the fellows must be on leave or sabbatical from their home institution under the NIH Intramural Visiting Fellow Program (https://policymanual.nih.gov/2300-320-3). Administrative Supplements
Administrative supplements to support interdisciplinary scientific collaborations between CFAR and nursing schools and research organizations supporting nursing research! The purpose of this supplement is to support innovative research on HIV-related nursing science from early stage investigators who are affiliated with nursing schools or research organizations that support nursing research. The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) intends to provide supplemental funds to CFARs to help develop collaborations between nursing schools or organizations that support nursing research affiliated with or near to CFARs.
Funding will be in the form of a supplement to the Developmental Core with funds restricted for use in pilot studies to support innovative HIV-related nursing research.
NOTE: Studies involving clinical trials are not allowed.

Eligible Individuals:
The award is intended for early stage investigators who are in the process of developing an independent research career and who have not yet received an R01 or equivalent grant from the NIH. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply for NIH support. Multiple PDs/PIs are not allowed.

HIV Implementation Science Resources
The Third Coast CFAR is pleased to announce two new resources for HIV researchers with an interest in Implementation Science. Over the last two years, our Behavioral, Social, and Implementation Sciences core has worked closely with colleagues in the NIDA-funded Center for Prevention Implementation Methodology (Ce-PIM) at Northwestern to develop a series of workshops tailored to faculty engaged in or interested in HIV research. While prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS has improved in the United States, there are still many health disparities, particularly affecting our minority communities. The California HIV/AIDS Research program (CHRP), along with the University of California San Diego, and other organizations have been seeking ways to positively impact these at-risk populations. Be Ready for the AIDS Study Section Reorganization for September 2018 Receipt Date
The NIH AIDS Study Sections are being reorganized to align the AIDS and Related Research (AARR) integrated review group (IRG) with current and emerging areas of HIV/AIDS research and to support best practices for scientific breadth and meeting management.
Six new study sections will cover basic, translational, clinical, and population science. The new study sections are expected to be in place in time for the September 2018 application due date.

ACS Institutional Research Grant

24th Annual West Coast Retrovirus Meeting
Strategies for an HIV Cure
Please save the dates of Wednesday October 10th – Friday October 12th, 2018 for the fourth biennial Strategies for an HIV Cure meeting at the NIH main campus. This is a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) program-driven meeting with the goal of fostering communication and collaboration among researchers funded by NIAID HIV cure-related programs and grants and with the community at large. The meeting also serves as the venue for this year’s annual joint meeting of the Martin Delaney Collaboratories.
Poster abstracts are highly encouraged, oral presentations will be by invitation only. The meeting is open to the public, and registration is free.

International Workshop on Microbiome in HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention
The 4th International Workshop on the Microbiome in HIV will be held 16-17 October 2018, in Rockville, MD.
The understanding of the human microbiome continues to grow rapidly; however information on the role of HIV infection on changes in the microbiome, and the role of the microbiome in HIV transmission, prevention, pathogenesis and treatment is still limited. While research in this area may be presented at major conferences, there is often limited time for in-depth discussion and debate among cross-disciplinary experts on new data and their implications. The aim of this workshop is to provide increased opportunities for discussion and exchange of knowledge following formal presentation of the latest research.
This 2 day event will have invited lectures by key research leaders from both the broader Microbiome field, as well as HIV/Microbiome investigators, oral abstract presentations and poster presentations. The conference will be unique in its approach, as it will engage basic scientists and clinicians from the HIV field and leading scientists involved in microbiome researchs. Registration is free. There will also be a Young Investigator Scholarship program to support travel, to encourage participation of emerging investigators.

CRDF Global Request for Proposals (RFP)
CRDF Global is accepting proposals on behalf of the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to fund collaborative global HIV/TB research projects across the Regional Prospective Observational Research in TB (RePORT) International consortia the 19 Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) allowing for work to extend across the two programs.
This supplemental funding is aimed at supporting ongoing projects by participating members of CFARs and the RePORT consortia to implement cross cutting research activities addressing biomarker discovery that is of special importance to TB/HIV co-infections. Eligible applicants must be investigators from currently active RePORT and CFAR sites.

This NIH Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support development of innovative research strategies feasible as a self-test to detect HIV in the earliest stage of initial HIV infection (ideally less than 2 weeks post-infection) and/or to monitor viral rebound after stopping or developing resistance to antiretroviral therapy.

NIDA has published a new RFA on HIV/AIDS research, RFA-DA-19-009, titled Modeling HIV Neuropathology Using Microglia from Human iPSC and Cerebral Organoids. The mechanism of the support is R01 and R21. This RFA invites research grant applications to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms delineating the neuropathophysiology of HIV-associated neurological disorders (HAND) in the setting of long-term combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) conditions using induced microglia and cerebral organoids generated from patient derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines. It has a Letter of Intent Due Date of November 18, and a submission date of December 19, 2018.
