Artificial Intelligence (AI) Scientific Working Group

The San Diego Center for AIDS Research (SD CFAR) AI Scientific Working Group aims to foster HIV research and public health gains by leveraging the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

Our mission is threefold. To accelerate, critique, and translate (ACT) AI solutions for HIV. 

1. Accelerate. Promote the development of AI solutions for HIV. We strive to encourage and support the creation of innovative AI applications that can enhance various aspects of HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and patient management. This includes developing AI models for drug discovery, disease monitoring, risk prediction, and public health.
2. Critique. Facilitate the evaluation of AI tools for HIV. We recognize the importance of rigorously evaluating AI tools before their deployment. We will provide a collaborative environment that encourages researchers to assess the performance, safety, and ethical implications of AI solutions. 
3. Translate. Effectively implement AI tools and solutions within HIV clinical care settings and research environments. We recognize that the successful adoption of these technologies requires a multifaceted approach that addresses technical, operational, and human factors. Toward that end we will foster an environment that supports research addressing implementation practice. 

To achieve ACT innovations we will foster education, collaboration, and knowledge sharing to empower the HIV research community with AI capabilities. This includes organizing seminars, workshops, and a dedicated forum for researchers to present their work, discuss challenges, and share best practices.
Our approach is multidisciplinary, bringing together experts from diverse fields, including HIV research, computer science, biomedical engineering, ethics, and healthcare policy. We actively seek out collaborations across the SD CFAR ecosystem.
