NIH Approval

Sidebar

San Diego CFAR grants that have international components must be approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) before we will be able to issue any funds.

The San Diego CFAR International Core will work with you on your Development or International Pilot grant to obtain the following documents needed for NIH approval:

  • A summary of your study, including budget allocations (for Pilot grants, at least 50% must be allocated to the international site)
  • IRB/Ethics approvals from the international institution and UC San Diego
  • Proof of training in human research subjects' protection for all key personnel named in your grant's budget
    • Your own institution may offer training that will be accepted by the NIH. If not, you are welcome to complete training through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program). Here is a link to a video for information on accessing the CITI Program website, creating an account, and selecting online courses.

The International Core will send the above documents and a copy of your application to the NIH. The NIH will route the documents through its approval procedure. This procedure typically takes six to eight weeks. If any questions arise, the International Core will contact you. The end result will be a revised Notice of Award from the NIH that specifically authorizes the San Diego CFAR to spend the funds in your budget plus indirect costs up to 8% for the international site.
