The Biostatistics and Modeling (BAM) Core of the San Diego Center for AIDS Research is a centralized resource that provides quantitative expertise, collaboration, and training in the areas of biostatistics and infectious disease modeling.

The BAM Core is composed of two inter-connected units. The Biostatistics Unit handles statistical requests including pre-award statistical support and post-award collaboration. The Modeling Unit supports research involving HIV epidemic and pathogenesis modeling and health economic evaluation. Initial service requests should be directed towards one of these two units, although collaborations and cross-unit requests are encouraged and accommodated.

The BAM core has a particular focus on training and mentoring the next generation of HIV researchers on biostatistics and modeling methodologies. As such, we provide multiple formal and informal training activities in quantitative methods, please contact us for details.

The BAM Core Biostatistics Unit provides support in the following areas:

  • Pre-award grant support (power, sample size, statistical considerations sections)
  • Experimental design and analysis
  • Clinical trials (Phase I, II, III) design and conduct
  • Observational studies (cohort, case-control, and other)
  • Genetic studies
  • Secondary data analyses
  • Longitudinal data analysis
  • Survival analysis
  • Categorical data analysis
  • Missing data imputation techniques
  • Survey designs
  • Innovative statistical methods development

The BAM Core Modeling Unit provides support in the following areas:

  • HIV epidemic modeling (compartmental/individual/network models) among general populations and key populations (such as people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men, and female sex workers)
  • Epidemic modeling of HIV coinfections, such as HCV, HBV, syphilis, and TB
  • Within-host HIV mechanistic modeling of disease pathogenesis (including multiple-scale modeling)
  • Health economic evaluation of HIV prevention, diagnosis, and care interventions utilizing cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, value of information, and/or budgetary impact analyses.
  • Innovative epidemic and economic modeling methods development
