Stephen Rawlings, MD, PhD grew up in Connecticut and attended medical school in New York City before fleeing to warmer weather in Southern California. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at UC San Diego and then transitioned to an Infectious Diseases fellowship. As part of that fellowship, he is doing research as a Postdoctoral Fellow under the guidance of Dr. Davey Smith and Dr. Sara Gianella. His research project for his PhD involved interrogating HIV reservoirs in an in vitro model of HIV latency and this has dovetailed nicely with his work at the UCSD CFAR where he assists with the Last Gift study and revealing reservoirs in People Living with HIV.
In addition to his research, he sees patients in a primary care clinic at the San Diego VA Medical Center and also works on the inpatient, Infectious Diseases service. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking, gardening, and training for triathlons.
