UCSD CFAR International Program Visiting Scholars

Download a Visiting Scholars Program application.

The UCSD CFAR International Program's Visiting Scholars Program is designed to form new collaborations between UCSD CFAR members and scholars in international settings. Applicants are welcome from resource-limited countries that have a per capita gross domestic product of less than $10,000 USD.

Applicants are invited to outline a research and training plan for themselves for one month up to one year. The research and training plan may include any combination of the following: state-of-the-art laboratory or analytical methods, bioethics, clinical trials research, and/or grant proposal writing. Applicants are encouraged to choose no more than two areas of emphasis during their period of study at UCSD or one of the UCSD CFAR-affiliated institutions.

Eligibility
Applicants must be faculty members at or above the Assistant Professor level at established academic institutions in countries in which HIV/AIDS research and treatment are considered priorities. These countries must have a per capita gross domestic product of less than $10,000 USD.

Award Limitations
Visiting Scholar awards are limited to $30,000 USD. Only one award will be permitted per person. Applicants are encouraged to seek additional funds to support their research and training, living expenses, and travel to and from UCSD or one of the UCSD CFAR-affiliated institutions.

Applicants may also request a Visiting Scholars award to establish a research and training relationship in their home country with a member of the UCSD CFAR. Successful applicants will be required to spend at least one week on site at UCSD.

Due Dates
Applications may be submitted at any time. Awards will be presented to successful applicants based on merit and availability of funds. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early in the calendar year. When funds have been spent for the year, applications will be considered for the following year.

Note: Applicants should apply at least four months and preferably longer before their planned arrival date. This time will permit successful applicants to request and receive visas and other travel documents, make travel and housing arrangements, and confirm plans with their CFAR collaborator.

Program Requirements
At the conclusion of their training, award recipients will be required to (1) write a report on their experience with the Visiting Scholars program, (2) deliver a seminar or lecture on the UCSD campus to review the training received and/or the research conducted, and (3) participate in an exit interview with one of the International Core co-directors.
